Ghana starts building 175-hectare irrigation scheme to boost rice production

In Ghana, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has begun construction of the Anunuso Water Conservation Scheme, a 175-hectare irrigation project in the Ashanti Region. The project, part of the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme, aims to reduce farmers' reliance on rainfall and boost rice production. It is expected to benefit at least 220 farmers and create about 2,500 jobs in the rice value chain. The scheme is projected to increase rice yields from 2.5 to 5 metric tonnes per hectare, producing about 1,100 metric tonnes of milled rice annually.
