Islamic State claims attack on police in Kirkuk, Iraq, killing one officer

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack on police officers near Kirkuk, Iraq, which killed one officer and wounded four others. This is the first such attack since the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq on September 30. The US-led coalition had been fighting IS in Iraq and Syria since 2014. Although IS lost its territorial caliphate in Iraq in 2017 and Syria in 2019, its cells continue to operate and carry out sporadic attacks. The security situation in Iraq has worsened following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
