In July 2026, Spotify launched a new feature called Running Mode, aimed at enhancing the experience of users who enjoy running while listening to music. This feature is available exclusively to Premium subscribers and can be accessed through the Fitness hub that Spotify introduced in April. Currently, it is available on the iOS app for users in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. The Running Mode allows users to create personalized playlists based on their workout goals, music preferences, and desired beats per minute (BPM). Users can choose from 25 curated running playlist presets and customize them according to their preferred music genres, workout duration, and training methods, including interval, steady, and pyramid training. Additionally, the feature includes optional audio prompts in English that provide motivation and cues without interrupting the music. This new feature builds on Spotify's previous attempts to cater to runners, including the Spotify Running feature launched in 2015, which was retired in 2018. Unlike the earlier version, which automatically detected a user's pace using phone hardware, the new Running Mode requires users to define their playlist requirements proactively. This shift reflects Spotify's commitment to enhancing user experience through personalization and AI-powered features, as evidenced by the popularity of fitness-based prompts introduced with Prompted Playlists last year. The introduction of Running Mode is part of Spotify's broader strategy to engage fitness enthusiasts and provide them with a seamless music experience tailored to their workout routines.
