University of Nevada Las Vegas to graduate first student with mariachi minor

In Las Vegas, Nevada, the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) offers a minor in mariachi, a traditional Mexican folk music, to train future educators for the Clark County School District, which has one of the largest mariachi programs in the U.S. with about 6,000 students. Rodríguez Olivas, a 20-year-old student, will be the first to graduate with this minor. He was previously the student director of Mariachi Joya, an award-winning ensemble from Las Vegas High School that performed at President Biden's 2021 inauguration. After graduation, he plans to teach mariachi in the district.
