Sri Lanka's president inaugurates first grid-scale battery storage and largest floating solar plant
On September 18, 2026, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake inaugurated the country's first grid-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility in Anuradhapura. Developed by WindForce PLC and Vidullanka PLC, the 10 MW/40 MWh facility is the first of 13 such projects that will provide 130 MW/520 MWh of storage capacity. The president also opened Sri Lanka's largest floating solar power plant, a 5 MW facility owned by WindForce, expected to generate 9 GWh annually. These projects support Sri Lanka's clean energy transition and grid stability.
