In the United States, a new exhibition is highlighting the artwork of Avital Sagalyn, an artist who spent two summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, during the 1940s. Despite demonstrating an early talent for art, Sagalyn remained largely unknown in the art world for most of her life, choosing to avoid commercialism and public attention. Her son, Dan Sagalyn, noted that it wasn't until 2017 that he fully appreciated her extensive body of work. Sagalyn's reluctance to showcase her art stemmed from a desire to share it on her own terms, as explained by her daughter-in-law, Elaine Grossman. Sagalyn's childhood was marked by the turmoil of World War II, which influenced her early artistic expression. One of her most significant works, titled 'The Horror of War,' was created during her high school years and depicted the grim realities of conflict. However, after this piece, she refrained from addressing war in her later works. Instead, Sagalyn developed a unique artistic practice characterized by her exploration of themes and materials, often creating variations on a theme until she felt she had captured her intended message. Her artistic journey included a notable encounter with Pablo Picasso, who recognized her talent and offered encouragement. Despite this mentorship, Sagalyn continued to shun public attention until 2019, when she finally agreed to her first solo museum exhibition at the age of 94. This exhibition marked a significant turning point in her career, allowing her work to gain the recognition it deserved. As her art receives increased attention, Sagalyn's legacy is beginning to reshape the narrative of American art history. The Provincetown Art Association and Museum is currently showcasing a survey of her work, emphasizing her distinctive use of line and light, which captures the essence of her surroundings.
