Mirabai Chanu wins India's first Asian Games weightlifting medal in 28 years with silver in Japan

On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the women's 49kg category, lifting a total of 198kg. This was India's first Asian Games weightlifting medal since 1998. India also secured bronze medals in men's and women's skeet shooting team events, as well as in men's badminton and soft tennis. However, the women's pistol team failed to win any medals. President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the athletes on their achievements.
