Committee to Protect Journalists removes 22 Gaza war dead from media worker list after identifying them as combatants

On September 24, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) removed 22 people from its list of media workers killed in the Gaza war after a review found they were combatants or militants. The review was triggered by obituaries from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. CPJ reclassified 19 Palestinians as militants, removed three others, and reinstated four people, including two Israeli journalists killed on October 7, 2023. Despite the changes, CPJ says Israeli forces killed 191 journalists and media workers since the war began. Israel denies targeting journalists, while CPJ maintains its figures show Israel is the world's leading killer of journalists.
