In a significant move for the robotics industry, Hyundai Motor Group is set to gain full ownership of Boston Dynamics by acquiring SoftBank's stake in the US robotics company. This acquisition follows Hyundai's previous investment in Boston Dynamics, where it acquired approximately 80% of the shares in 2021 for $880 million. The deal, which is reported to cost Hyundai around 500 billion won (approximately $335 million), will allow Hyundai to integrate Boston Dynamics' advanced robotics capabilities into its manufacturing processes. The completion of this acquisition is expected to enhance Hyundai's long-term robotics strategy, enabling the company to leverage Boston Dynamics' physical AI technologies alongside its own manufacturing and mobility expertise. Furthermore, Hyundai plans to deploy Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robots at its factories in the US, with the robots scheduled to begin parts-sequencing work in 2028 and expand to component assembly by 2030. This strategic move aims to build an annual production capacity for 30,000 robots by 2028, with plans to deploy 25,000 units at Hyundai Motor and Kia plants before offering them to external customers. The acquisition is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Hyundai's competitiveness in the robotics sector and pursuing greater synergies within its operations.
