Congo police tear gas opposition protesters over constitutional changes

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, police fired tear gas on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of protesters in Kinshasa and other cities, organized by the opposition coalition C64, against constitutional changes that could allow President Felix Tshisekedi to seek a third term. The protests, held despite Ebola-related restrictions, began peacefully but turned violent after clashes with pro-government supporters. Opposition leader Martin Fayulu accused police of firing at protesters, while government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya defended the action, saying protests must be exercised properly. This follows a similar June rally that was also dispersed.
