On October 5, 2026, Singapore announced S$118 million in public funding for bioeconomy research, the largest such commitment to date, under its S$37 billion RIE 2030 plan. The initiative aims to develop chemicals from biological materials, addressing challenges in the energy and chemicals sector, which accounts for one-fifth of domestic manufacturing output. Concurrently, the S$50 million National Centre for Engineering Biology was launched at the National University of Singapore to support research in specialty chemicals and AI-enabled product design. The funding brings total bioeconomy spending to about S$200 million over five years.
