India's Supreme Court to hear challenge to new fee on UPI merchant payments above 2,000 rupees

India's Supreme Court will hear a plea on Monday challenging the government's decision to impose a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI person-to-merchant transactions above ₹2,000. The fee, set at 0.4% and capped at ₹300 for payments of ₹75,000 and above, takes effect from October 15, 2026. The PIL, filed by advocate Anjan Datta, argues the levy is arbitrary and lacks statutory safeguards. The court will hear the case before a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant.
