Portuguese-speaking nations recommend high-level mission to Guinea-Bissau after coup

The foreign ministers of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) met informally in New York on September 25, 2026, and recommended sending a high-level mission to Guinea-Bissau to support political stabilization and the return to democratic normalcy. The meeting was chaired by Timor-Leste, which holds the CPLP presidency. Guinea-Bissau has been suspended from the CPLP since December 2025 after a coup that deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. Cape Verde's foreign minister, Manuel Amante da Rosa, announced the recommendation, noting that relations between Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau are currently "lukewarm."
