UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls for global AI safety cooperation, warns against race to the bottom
On Wednesday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged global cooperation on artificial intelligence safety, warning that the world cannot afford a race to the bottom on AI safety. Speaking at UN headquarters in New York, he stressed that national action is essential but global coordination is indispensable. He referenced a proposal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to coordinate a slowdown in AI development. However, President Donald Trump dismissed AI extinction threats as a hoax, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg distanced his company from slowdown calls. Guterres said AI will be a major topic at next week's UN General Assembly.
