Preterm baby Bissan al-Kurd returns to Gaza from Egypt and reunites with mother Sundus al-Kurd

In October 2023, an Israeli airstrike in Beit Lahiya, Gaza, injured pregnant Sundus al-Kurd, leading to the premature birth of her daughter Bissan. Weeks later, Bissan was evacuated to Egypt in an incubator with other preterm infants. In March 2025, with a ceasefire, Bissan returned to Gaza and reunited with her mother, though she did not recognize her at first. The reunion was part of a UN-assisted mission. Bissan, now two and a half, still panics at loud noises. Another evacuated baby, Ibrahim, lost his mother to depression before he could meet her.
