Singapore will not cap autonomous vehicles as transport needs grow, minister says

Singapore's Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said on Wednesday, October 7, that the government will not cap the number of autonomous vehicles (AVs) because transport needs are growing. He noted that AVs are a small percentage of active taxi and private-hire drivers, so there is no immediate job impact. Singapore is deploying AVs for ride-hailing, with Waymo testing in 2027 and bookings in 2028. The government is offering career conversion programmes with up to 90% salary support to help drivers transition. By end-2028, several hundred AVs may operate, compared to 72,000 current drivers.
