India approves power exports to Nepal after deadly flood

India has approved exporting power to Nepal for 18 hours a day until December 31, after a devastating flood in Nepal last month wiped out about a tenth of its generation capacity. The flood, triggered by a glacier collapse, killed nearly 1,400 people and destroyed more than 12 hydropower plants. India will export up to 654 megawatts. Nepal, which relies on hydropower, halted its own exports and will buy electricity from India. Nepali officials are seeking $5 billion in international aid for rebuilding, arguing that climate change has hit poor countries that did little to cause it.
