In the United States, Rime, a voice AI startup founded in 2022, has raised $24 million in a Series A funding round led by M13 Ventures. The company, which is based in San Francisco, focuses on developing voice models that are trained on conversational data collected in-house, rather than relying on web-scraped audio. This approach aims to reduce the customization burden for clients, allowing for better adaptation to industry-specific terms and brand pronunciations. Rime's technology is designed to improve customer interactions in sectors such as food service, healthcare, airlines, and fintech.
Despite advancements in voice AI, many enterprises still prefer traditional Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, as current AI technology has not yet matched the effectiveness of IVR. Rime's co-founder, Lily Clifford, noted that while large language models have simplified the development of voice applications, they have not significantly enhanced the user experience. The company has developed a pipeline of models for speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and large language processing, which helps streamline operations and reduce reliance on multiple orchestration systems.
Rime's unique approach to training its voice models has attracted clients such as Mayo Clinic, Dialpad, Upstart, and Asurion, who have reported longer call durations and improved customer satisfaction. The recent funding will enable Rime to expand its team of 35 employees, focusing on model development, engineering, and partnerships. The company has also appointed Rafael Valle as Chief Scientist, who brings experience from Meta Superintelligence Labs and NVIDIA's audio research team.
As the voice AI market becomes increasingly competitive, Rime aims to differentiate itself by providing tailored solutions that address the specific needs of enterprises. The startup's commitment to collecting its own conversational data and refining its voice models positions it well to compete against established players like ElevenLabs and Deepgram, as well as dedicated customer support firms. With the new funding, Rime is poised to enhance its offerings and further penetrate the enterprise market, potentially reshaping how businesses handle customer interactions.
