UN rights chief says Gaza mass grave discoveries may be war crimes

The UN human rights chief said Tuesday that the recovery of hundreds of bodies from rubble in Gaza has raised fresh concerns about possible war crimes. Volker Turk said remains of entire families, many women and children, were being unearthed. The Palestinian Civil Defence has recovered over 630 bodies since November 2025, with thousands more believed buried. Israel has rejected allegations of deliberately targeting civilians. The discoveries revived concerns from a 2024 UN report. Israel's assault on Gaza began after Hamas's October 2023 raid, and a ceasefire in October 2025 has not halted strikes.
