In a strategic move to bolster its position in the cloud computing market, Scaleway, a French cloud company backed by the Iliad Group, has acquired high-performance computing (HPC) provider Qarnot. This acquisition comes in response to the increasing demand for cloud services from businesses, particularly those requiring advanced computing capabilities. Both companies are headquartered in France, and the deal aims to enhance Scaleway's offerings in HPC, which is crucial for businesses looking to improve their AI performance and computing speeds.
Qarnot is known for its innovative approach to waste heat recovery, which allows it to redirect up to 95% of the heat generated by its HPC servers into community services, such as district heating networks and public facilities. This model not only addresses the excessive waste heat produced by HPC systems but also contributes to sustainability efforts by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For instance, Qarnot has partnered with A2A in Brescia, Italy, on a project funded by the EU that is expected to avoid nearly 23,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions.
The acquisition is expected to provide Scaleway with greater control over the heat and emissions generated by its operations, aligning with the company's goal of developing next-generation AI applications.
