Alex Ovechkin, NHL all-time goal leader, announces retirement after 2026-27 season

On October 5, 2026, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin announced he will retire from the NHL after the 2026-27 season. The 41-year-old Russian, who holds the all-time goal-scoring record with 929 regular-season goals, made the announcement two days before the Capitals' home opener. Ovechkin, who has played his entire career with Washington, led the team to their first Stanley Cup in 2018. His retirement will end his long rivalry with Sidney Crosby and has already caused ticket prices to soar for his final home game.
