This downturn is primarily attributed to a shortage of memory chips, which has led to increased prices and reduced consumer demand. The report from Counterpoint Research highlights that the memory shortage has particularly affected entry and mid-tier smartphone manufacturers, such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, as consumers are opting to delay new purchases or downgrade to older models instead of upgrading. As a result, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have reported double-digit percentage declines in shipments year over year, largely due to the volatility in the market caused by rising memory costs. In contrast, leading manufacturers Apple and Samsung have managed to increase their market shares during this period. Apple achieved a record 20% market share, driven by strong demand for its premium iPhones, with shipments rising by 3%. Samsung also saw a 4% increase in shipments, reclaiming the top position with a 24% market share. The resilience of premium phones can be attributed to their bundling with carrier contracts, which helps mitigate the upfront costs for consumers. Looking ahead, Counterpoint Research anticipates that global smartphone shipments will decline by approximately 14% for the entire year, with the memory shortage expected to persist until 2027. The report suggests that budget manufacturers may need to focus on trimming low-margin models and increasing their offerings of refurbished and previous-generation devices to cater to budget-conscious consumers. The ongoing challenges in the smartphone market are compounded by the increasing demand for artificial intelligence technologies, which is diverting resources from consumer electronics, including laptops and gaming consoles. Additionally, IDC reported a 4.9% decline in PC shipments, further illustrating the widespread impact of the memory shortage across various sectors of the electronics market.
