On October 2, the World Food Programme reported that hunger in Yemen is accelerating, with a record number of people unable to meet their food needs as conflict intensifies. The escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthi group is the most serious since a UN-brokered truce in 2022. The renewed fighting has displaced tens of thousands and threatens Red Sea shipping lanes. In government-controlled areas, three out of four households are skipping meals, according to WFP's Matthew Hollingworth, who called the situation "absolutely devastating."
