Taiwan president insists on strength to secure peace with China

Taiwan commemorated the 68th anniversary of the 1958 clash with Chinese forces on August 23, 2026. President Lai Ching-te visited the Kinmen and Matsu islands, emphasizing that peace can only be secured through strength. He expressed gratitude to veterans and stated that Taiwan will not yield any territory. Amid ongoing tensions with China, which views Taiwan as its territory, Taiwan plans to increase its defense spending to over 1 trillion New Taiwan dollars ($30 billion) next year.
