American cyclist Brandon McNulty wins world road race title in Montreal, ending 33-year US drought

On September 27, 2026, American cyclist Brandon McNulty won the UCI Road World Championships men's road race in Montreal, Canada, ending a 33-year title drought for the United States. McNulty, 28, completed the 273.4-kilometer course in 6 hours, 17 minutes, and 4 seconds, launching a solo breakaway with 32 kilometers to go. He held off a late challenge from Australia's Michael Matthews and Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands, who finished second and third, respectively. The absence of two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar, recovering from a crash, left the field open. McNulty's victory was the first for an American man since Lance Armstrong in 1993.
