A study by the World Weather Attribution group found that climate change played a significant role in the glacier collapse that triggered devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August. The disaster killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing. Researchers said rising temperatures, glacier thinning, permafrost thaw, and geological weaknesses combined to cause the collapse. The event was not an extreme weather event, but the fingerprints of climate change were clear in long-term changes. The study did not determine if the collapse would have happened without climate change, but warming intensified processes that made the slope less stable.
