The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho in the Ayacucho region at a depth of 66 kilometers. It was felt in several regions including Ica, Arequipa, and Lima. Two people were injured while evacuating in Coracora, and damage was reported to 22 homes, six health centers, and a school. Rockfalls occurred near Coracora, but no tsunami threat was issued. Peru is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of frequent seismic activity.
