Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, was removed from the Euro Stoxx 50 index on September 21, 2026, after its market value fell below the threshold. The removal came days after the company issued a profit warning, cutting its 2026 operating margin forecast to no more than 1% and flagging €10 billion in one-off charges. Shares have fallen nearly 30% this year. The removal adds pressure on the company, as index-tracking funds must sell their holdings. Volkswagen is also undergoing a major restructuring, including cutting 100,000 jobs and halving its model line-up.
