Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asks European Commission for fiscal flexibility to counter energy price surge

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has written to the European Commission and Eurogroup, asking for more fiscal flexibility to help households and businesses cope with rising energy prices. The letter, dated 30 September, proposes that temporary national support measures be excluded from the EU's spending cap. Energy prices have spiked since the US-Israel war with Iran began, with electricity costs exceeding €100 per megawatt-hour in most EU countries. Greece, which has the EU's largest national debt, is also facing elections in 2027. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has made a similar request, while Belgium has ruled out broad measures due to lack of funds.
