Liberia accepts 1,200 deportees from the US in controversial deal
Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees from the United States within a year. The first batch of 20 arrived on Thursday at Roberts International Airport. The deportees include nationals from Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean. Liberian officials say the move is humanitarian and not a quid pro quo. The US will support the program. This is part of Trump administration deals with about 30 countries to deport migrants to third countries, which critics say forces asylum seekers back to unsafe home countries.
