In recent months, Anthropic has begun to localize the pricing of its AI service, Claude, for users in India, marking a significant step in its strategy to cater to one of its largest markets outside the United States. This initiative comes as global AI companies increasingly adapt their offerings to meet the needs of the Indian market, which is characterized by a large population and a growing demand for AI technologies. Users in India have started to see subscription plans priced in Indian rupees on Claude's website and mobile applications, addressing long-standing requests for rupee-denominated subscriptions. Previously, Indian users faced challenges with dollar pricing and currency conversion, which complicated access to the service. The new pricing structure includes local taxes and offers various subscription options, such as Claude Pro at ₹2,000 per month and Claude Max starting at ₹11,999 per month. However, despite this positive development, Anthropic has not yet enabled payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a popular instant payment system in India. Users are still required to pay via credit or debit cards or through app store billing systems, which contrasts with OpenAI's earlier rollout of Indian rupee pricing for ChatGPT that included UPI support. This pricing localization is particularly important as India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the second-largest market for the service after the U.S. Anthropic's focus on India has been evident through its recent establishment of an office in Bengaluru and the appointment of Irina Ghose, former managing director of Microsoft India, to lead its operations in the country. The company has also formed partnerships with major Indian IT firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to enhance enterprise AI deployments. Despite these efforts, Anthropic faced challenges earlier this year when it suspended access to certain AI models for non-U.S. entities, prompting some Indian developers to explore alternatives. Although access to the Fable 5 model has since been restored, limitations on the Mythos 5 model remain. As the Indian market continues to grow, converting widespread usage into paid subscriptions presents a challenge, particularly in a price-sensitive environment.
