This sentiment reflects a growing trend towards valuing sentimental items over mere accumulation of possessions. The survey also highlighted that nearly half of the respondents would prefer to inherit nothing at all rather than deal with the belongings of a deceased relative. This indicates a significant emotional burden associated with clearing out a loved one's home, as over half of the participants reported having to do so in the past, with many finding it difficult to grieve amidst the clutter. The findings suggest that the emotional connection to inherited items is more important than the items themselves, as people treasure possessions that carry stories or memories. The survey also noted that a considerable number of Americans feel overwhelmed by their belongings, with 65 percent expressing frustration over how their items are organized. This frustration is compounded by the fact that many individuals actively declutter their homes, with 16 percent doing so daily. The results of this survey are part of a broader global study that included respondents from Canada and Australia, emphasizing a shared sentiment across these countries regarding the significance of sentimental value in inheritance.
