Hong Kong police arrest journalist Tang Ho-wing and activist Lee Ying-chi on suspicion of sedition

Hong Kong police arrested journalist Tang Ho-wing, founder of Boom News, and activist Lee Ying-chi on suspicion of sedition. The arrests occurred on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in connection with a gathering outside Prince Edward MTR station on August 31, the anniversary of the 2019 protest crackdown. Police accused them of spreading disinformation and chanting seditious slogans. The Hong Kong Journalists Association expressed concern, noting this is the first known arrest of a journalist under the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. The arrests have raised fresh concerns about press freedom in Hong Kong.
