In Sweden, Einride, a company specializing in electric and autonomous trucking, has made a significant move by acquiring the EV charging startup Flipturn in an all-stock deal valued at $38 million. This acquisition marks Einride's first since becoming a publicly traded entity and is expected to close within the month. Flipturn, which was founded in 2022 and has a workforce of 17 employees, has developed an innovative EV-charging software platform that adheres to the Open Charge Point Protocol, allowing it to communicate with various EV chargers. The software is designed to monitor the health of charging infrastructure and gather data on vehicle battery levels, driving history, and routes, enabling companies to manage their charging needs more effectively. Furthermore, it integrates seamlessly with on-site solar and energy-storage systems, enhancing the overall efficiency of electric vehicle operations. Einride's CEO, Roozbeh Charli, emphasized that this acquisition is a crucial step in their strategy to scale operations in the U.S. market. By bringing Flipturn into the fold, Einride aims to become a more vertically integrated company, offering not only electric trucks but also the necessary charging software to ensure their efficient and reliable operation. This strategic move is particularly appealing to potential customers who may be hesitant to transition to electric big rigs due to concerns about charging infrastructure. Einride is already recognized for its unique cabless autonomous trucks, but its primary revenue source comes from its fleet of 200 heavy-duty electric trucks, which are currently in operation for major companies like Heineken, PepsiCo, and Carlsberg Sweden across Europe, North America, and the United Arab Emirates.
