In South Korea, Krafton, the developer and publisher of the PUBG series, announced significant financial growth in its second quarter earnings report for 2026. The PUBG intellectual property, which includes PUBG: Battlegrounds, PUBG Mobile, and Battlegrounds Mobile India, collectively generated 25 percent more revenue compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth is attributed to the ongoing popularity of the games, which consistently rank among the top five most played titles on Steam, despite not making frequent headlines in the gaming news. The company highlighted that recent collaborations and the introduction of new game modes have played a crucial role in this success.
The introduction of the co-op PvE mode Xeno Point and a crossover event with the Payday series on PC have been particularly effective in attracting players. Additionally, the mobile segment has benefited from user-generated content (UGC) initiatives under the World of Wonder banner, which allows players to create and share their own content. Krafton plans to enhance these creation tools and expand UGC opportunities by incorporating global intellectual properties such as Naruto and Spider-Man, aiming to boost user engagement and reward creators with a new in-game currency.
Krafton's overall operating profit for the second quarter reached a record 410.9 billion KRW, approximately £213 million, marking a remarkable 67.0 percent increase year-on-year. The revenue growth was particularly strong in the PC and console segments, with PC revenue soaring by 155.1 percent and console revenue increasing by 143.3 percent. In contrast, the mobile segment experienced a more modest growth of 5.5 percent. This disparity highlights the shifting dynamics within the gaming industry, where traditional platforms are seeing a resurgence in popularity.
Looking ahead, Krafton is committed to continuing this upward trend by introducing more diverse game modes and collaborations in the latter half of 2026. The company is optimistic about maintaining its momentum and further expanding its player base across all platforms. The success of the PUBG franchise serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of battle royale games and the potential for innovative content to drive player engagement and revenue growth.
