In Ireland, Ryanair has announced a significant investment of €50 million aimed at expanding its engineering operations at Shannon Airport. This investment will lead to the creation of over 400 highly skilled jobs, marking a substantial boost to the local economy. The company has already submitted a planning application for a new four-bay aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hangar, which, upon approval, is expected to commence construction in 2027 and become operational by late 2028. Currently, Ryanair operates a three-bay maintenance facility at Shannon, which supports more than 200 skilled mechanic and engineering roles.
The new MRO hangar will not only enhance Ryanair's operational capabilities but also play a crucial role in the airline's ongoing commitment to aircraft maintenance and engineering training across its network. As part of this investment, Ryanair will establish a new Engineering Academy, which aims to create 80 apprenticeship roles and train over 400 additional aircraft mechanics between 2027 and 2031. This initiative is designed to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the aviation sector and ensure a steady supply of talent for the future.
Ryanair's CEO, Eddie Wilson, emphasized the importance of this project for job creation, skills development, and growth in the aviation industry. He noted that Shannon Airport has been pivotal in maintaining Ryanair's fleet and that this expansion will further solidify the region's role in aviation maintenance.
