Formula 1 to shorten Grand Prix race distance to 290km in 2027

The FIA announced on Monday that Formula 1 Grand Prix races will be shortened from 305km to 290km starting in the 2027 season. This change, agreed by the F1 Commission, responds to new power unit regulations that increase fuel consumption, potentially leaving some teams unable to finish races with existing fuel tanks. The Monaco Grand Prix remains at 260km. Additionally, the three-hour race limit for wet-weather disruptions has been replaced by a flexible hard stop time, and free practice sessions can now be extended if interrupted. The 2027 season begins in Bahrain in March.
